"While moscow has increasingly referred to the 'Spirit of Anchorage', claiming that a framework for ending the war in Ukraine already exists, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has categorically rejected those claims", - Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty writes.
Speaking to journalists during a visit to Bahrain, Rubio directly refuted the coordinated wave of statements by senior russian officials claiming that an informal agreement on Ukraine had been reached at the Alaska summit in August 2025.
"There was no agreement in Alaska. A proposal was made in Alaska, but there was no agreement there", - Rubio said.
The alleged agreement supposedly called for the voluntary withdrawal of Ukraine's Defense Forces from the Donetsk oblast and Kyiv's "voluntary" fulfillment of all the objectives of the "special military operation".
According to Rubio, the approach proposed by the russian side in Anchorage last year failed because it was unacceptable to Ukraine. "The proposals that were reported—they call it '3+2', the division of territories—those attempts failed. A peace agreement cannot be concluded unless both sides agree to it, and the Ukrainians did not agree. That is why those efforts did not produce results", - European Pravda quoted the U.S. Secretary of State as saying during a press briefing in Manila, where he held a meeting with russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
According to Rubio, new proposals and ideas need to be explored because the previous approach remains unacceptable.
As previously reported, according to the russian Foreign Ministry, during his meeting with Rubio, Lavrov once again reiterated the kremlin's "commitment" to the proposals "put forward by the American side" during the meeting between putin and Trump in Alaska, "to which the russian leader gave his consent".
