“The future Prime Minister of Hungary, Péter Magyar, wants to meet in June with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to ‘open a new chapter in bilateral relations’ and resolve a long-standing dispute over the rights of Ukraine’s ethnic Hungarians”, - DW reported on April 28.
“I am initiating a meeting with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky at the beginning of June, symbolically in Berehove, where the majority of the population are Hungarians”, - Magyar wrote on Facebook after a meeting in Budapest with the mayor of the Ukrainian city of Berehove, Zoltán Babják.
Magyar, who is to take the oath as prime minister at the first session of the new parliament on May 9, added that the goal of the meeting with Zelensky is to help “improve the situation of Hungarians in Zakarpattia and give them the opportunity to remain in their homeland”, - the report says.
Zoltán Babják noted on Facebook that in Ukraine the Hungarian community, along with other national communities, receives support from the state at all levels.
“There is no talk of any infringement of the rights of the national community, since these issues are regulated by the state and implemented in practice. Systematic work and dialogue at all levels continue on certain issues of the Hungarian community’s life that require resolution. The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is personally engaged in these issues, as evidenced by his repeated meetings with the community”, - Babják emphasized.
He reminded that “significant resources have been invested in restoring infrastructure in communities where Hungarians live in Zakarpattia”.
“Ukraine has adopted important decisions at the legislative level that now make it possible to ensure the rights of Ukrainian Hungarians in the fields of education, culture, daily life, and other areas of community life. Thanks to Péter Magyar for the meeting. Thanks to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky for support and attention to the issues of the Hungarian community”, - Babják emphasized.
