This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine.
According to intelligence officials, this cell was gathering information about the military security of the Zakarpattia oblast, looking for vulnerabilities in the region's land and air defenses, and studying the socio-political views of local residents. In particular, it involved analyzing behavior scenarios in case Hungarian troops entered the region.
The SSU detained two agents from the Hungarian intelligence network. The investigation established that both individuals were handled by a career officer of Hungarian military intelligence, whose identity has already been confirmed.
One of his agents was a 40-year-old former soldier from the Berehove district, who was recruited by foreigners and placed in a "standby mode" back in 2021.
Counterintelligence and investigators discovered that the handler "activated" this agent in September 2024. He was tasked with studying local sentiment and gathering the following information: what the reaction of the military and civilian population of Zakarpattia would be if a peacekeeping contingent entered the oblast, particularly Hungarian troops; what military equipment and weapons could be purchased on the Zakarpattia black market; what the migration situation is like among the Hungarian population in the region; what military forces are stationed in Zakarpattia, how many vehicles and combat machines there are; how well law enforcement agencies are staffed, their numbers, and so on.
