In Ukraine, 187,387 children were born in 2023, which is 32% less than in 2021 when 273,772 infants were born. The highest number of newborns was in Kyiv, while the lowest was in the Kherson oblast, according to data from the OpenDataBot analytical center, citing the Ministry of Justice.

The overall decline in birth rates has been observed in Ukraine since 2013, with an annual reduction of 6-7% in the number of births.

In the first year of the full-scale invasion, the number of newborns sharply decreased by 25% to 206,000 children. For comparison, from 2010 to 2013, Ukraine had an annual birth rate of about half a million children.

In 2023, the most significant decline in birth rates, excluding temporarily occupied territories and combat zones, was recorded in Kyiv, with 19,979 babies born, which is 33% less than in 2021.

Nevertheless, the capital still leads in the number of newborn Ukrainians.The Lviv oblast ranks second with 16,638 births last year, followed by the Dnipropetrovsk oblast with 14,433 newborns.

It's worth noting that compared to the first year of the full-scale invasion, there was an increase in the number of babies in the front-line areas of the Mykolaiv oblast (+5%) and the Kharkiv oblast (+3%) last year. The most significant decline in birth rates, -18%, was recorded in Poltava oblast.

As reported, since the beginning of the full-scale war, 40,470 couples got married, and 29,857 babies were born in Kyiv.
