The negotiation process between Ukraine and russia has no prospects for a rapid end to the war, and the kremlin’s demands for the voluntary withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the non-occupied territory of the Donetsk oblast are unrealistic. Military expert and former spokesperson for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Vladyslav Selezniov shared this opinion with OstroV.
He emphasized that under current conditions, no negotiations are capable of bringing quick peace.
“The end of the war is possible only in the case of complete capitulation by one of the sides. And both russia and Ukraine currently have resources to wage war”, - he stressed.
In his opinion, there are currently no grounds to believe that the war can end through agreements.
“The russian economy is still functioning. Ukraine, in turn, has the support of Western partners and its own material capabilities”, - the expert noted.
At the same time, Seleznev drew attention to changes in the overall military dynamics. According to his assessment, since mid-October 2023 the russian federation has de facto been in a state of strategic offensive.
“Operations by the Armed Forces of Ukraine are extremely important, because while on the defensive, we are gradually destroying the enemy’s offensive potential, depriving it of illusions and opportunities”, - he said.
The expert added that despite daily resource losses on the part of the russian federation, the overall trend for the adversary does not change.
“We are systematically destroying its equipment and weapons, in particular armored vehicles. The war has changed radically: if at the beginning of the full-scale invasion we saw tank columns of dozens and hundreds of units, now the enemy is forced to use even unadapted automotive equipment”, - Selezniov explained.
According to him, although the russian federation still has reserves of armored vehicles, it uses them much more cautiously.
“They understand that modern Ukrainian strike capabilities do not allow these resources to be used effectively and on a mass scale, regardless of the level of training”, - the expert concluded.
