"The nuclear arms treaty between the United States and russia, START III, or New START — as the last major agreement in the field of nuclear disarmament — expires today. Thus, for the first time in decades, there are no longer binding limits on the nuclear arsenals of the world’s two largest nuclear powers", - writes “BILD in Russian” Telegram channel on February 5.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called what is happening an “extremely serious moment for international peace”. The risk of the use of nuclear weapons, he said, “is as high as it has not been for decades”.
After the treaty expired, russia stated that it no longer considers itself bound by restrictions on its nuclear arsenal.
"We proceed from the fact that the parties to the treaty are no longer bound by any obligations", - russia’s ministry of defense said.
"The United States, in turn, is so far showing restraint: President Donald Trump intends to speak out 'later', said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who at the same time emphasized that genuine arms control in the 21st century is 'impossible without China’s involvement'", - writes “BILD in Russian”.
