“I honestly do not believe that we need to change the Constitution of our state. Let the Ukrainian people decide what to do with our Constitution, and not someone else. Certainly not because of calls from the russian federation or anyone else. This is our Constitution and our course”, - President Volodymyr Zelensky said, expressing confidence that membership in the Alliance remains the best possible option for Ukraine’s security guarantees, Ukrainska Pravda reports.

Zelensky also expressed hope that U.S. policy toward Ukraine’s NATO membership could change over time.

The president emphasized that American skepticism regarding Ukraine in NATO appeared back under the previous U.S. administration. In particular, he stated that he had “directly asked the question of whether Ukraine could be in NATO” to former President Biden.

“This was even before the (full-scale) war. President Biden told me: ‘No, you will not be in NATO’. I returned to this question every time, and at some point in the White House it already caused smiles”, - he shared.

From Zelensky’s explanations it also followed that no arguments against Ukraine’s membership were given to him.

“I do not understand when they tell me, like, we are not against it in principle, but you will not be in NATO. Because that means that someone is against it. And one needs to speak openly about who is against it”, - he noted.
