“The new sanctions were introduced the day after Trump canceled plans to meet with putin. This indicates Trump’s deep disappointment in the russian president”, - writes Axios, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.
It is noted that the American leader became even more disappointed in russia after a conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on October 20. One of the American officials told the publication that this phone conversation yielded no results. At the same time, it made it clear that russia was not ready to conclude an agreement to end the war, and that holding a meeting between Trump and putin made no sense.
“This conclusion paved the way for Trump’s decision to impose new sanctions against russia”, - the American official noted.
Axios reminded that the US anti-russian sanctions introduced on October 22 became the first since Trump took office as president.
The US president had long stated that imposing sanctions against the aggressor country would undermine his diplomatic efforts to end the war. His change of decision indicates that he now considers such an approach unsuccessful.
