In an article for Foreign Affairs magazine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned against a new cold war due to the division of the world into blocs and called for efforts to create new partnerships. This is reported by BBC.
"Russia’s brutal attack on Ukraine in February 2022 was the beginning of a fundamentally new reality […] When Putin ordered the attack, he destroyed the European and international architecture of the world, which took decades to build. […] Acting as an imperial power, Russia today seeks to forcefully redraw borders and divide the world into blocs and spheres of influence again", - Scholz writes.
According to him, the world must not allow the russian president to achieve his goals, and "Russia’s revanchist imperialism must be stopped".
"Germany's decisive role at the moment is to become one of the main security providers in Europe by investing in our armed forces, strengthening the European defense industry, strengthening our military presence on the NATO’s eastern flank and training and equipping the Ukrainian armed forces".
According to Scholz, NATO’s actions should not lead to a direct confrontation with russia, but the alliance should deter further russian aggression.
"Our message to Moscow is very clear: we are determined to defend every inch of the NATO territory from any possible aggression", - the German chancellor stated.
As reported, Zelensky called on Germany to transfer the Patriot system to Ukraine.
