Occupation authorities of the "LNR" established a new holiday – the Day of the Cossacks, which will be celebrated on October 14. This is stated in the "decree" of leader of the republic Leonid Pasechnik.
"I decree: to establish a holiday in the "Luhansk People’s Republic" – the Day of the Cossacks…", - the document said.
The choice of date of the "holiday" fell on October 14, that is, on the holy holiday of the Intercession of the Theotokos.
Thus, wishing or not, the occupation authorities of the uncontrolled part of Luhansk oblast joined the Defender of the Fatherland Day in Ukraine, which is also celebrated as the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks.
Briefing note. Ukraine celebrates the Defender of the Fatherland Day on October 14. The celebration of this date was established in 2014 after the abolition of February 23 as the Defender of the Fatherland Day. October 14 is the day off since 2017. Orthodox and Greek Catholics celebrate the feast of the Intercession of the Theotokos on this day. The celebration of the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks coincides with the holiday of Intercession. Since ancient times, the Mother of God has been considered patroness of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Zaporozhian Cossacks built a church on the Sich in honor of the Intercession of the Theotokos with her icon.
