“There are no real results”: political analyst Ihor Petrenko explained why the U.S.–russia talks reached a dead end 12/04/2025 17:46:39. Total views 36. Views today — 36.

President of russia vladimir putin used the visit of the American delegation to moscow to strengthen his own positions and shift responsibility for the lack of progress in the negotiations onto Ukraine. Political analyst and head of the Analytical Center “United Ukraine” Ihor Petrenko told this to OstroV.

According to him, the visit itself did not produce any substantive results, but the kremlin managed to achieve one of its key informational goals.

“Nothing particularly significant came out of it. But, essentially, putin achieved one of his goals — he dragged out the negotiation process. Putin hasn’t withdrawn from it now, and he isn’t being blamed for continuing the war. So everyone says the talks went positively, and there’s no criticism from Trump’s side”, - Petrenko noted.

The expert emphasized that the kremlin immediately tried to use the contacts with the U.S. to form a favorable narrative: as if Ukraine is the one blocking possible agreements.

“We already see this, because they’re saying that Ukraine is unconstructive, that it’s Ukraine that ‘doesn’t want to’, ‘we offered them long ago, they didn’t listen’. And it’s unfortunate that they basically recorded this together with our American partners”, - the political analyst stressed.

At the same time, no real steps toward resolving the conflict have taken place. The positions of Kyiv and moscow remain incompatible, and none of the key points have shifted.

“In terms of any real results — there simply aren’t any. The positions of the sides were diametrically opposed and remain that way. There is essentially no progress”, - he underlined.

Petrenko also believes that putin used the meeting to demonstrate his intransigence in order to push the U.S. toward applying greater pressure on Ukraine.

“Perhaps now putin has shown the Americans that he is not the kind of figure who can make any serious concessions, and therefore, supposedly, it’ll be easier for them to pressure Ukraine and offer it some of their terms”, - the expert added.
