“The White House has acknowledged the failure of attempts to end the war between russia and Ukraine—US efforts to persuade the parties to compromise have been thwarted by the kremlin's ambitions and Kyiv's refusal to cede territory”, - reads the publication by The Atlantic, cited by RBC-Ukraine.
It is reported that US President Donald Trump expressed disappointment that his efforts to end the war between russia and Ukraine were unsuccessful. The publication notes that the White House attempted to pressure both Kyiv and moscow, but this produced no results.
According to journalists, the American leader underestimated putin’s determination. The russian dictator, the publication notes, was obsessed with the idea of destroying Ukrainian independence and did not consider compromises that would preserve Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Trump, according to sources, believed the conflict could be stopped with a simple deal that would recognize russia’s territorial gains and provide it with economic benefits.
However, as subsequent events showed, the russian side was not going to be satisfied with partial solutions.
“Recently, President Trump tried to change the dynamics: he told putin that he could provide Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles and tried to convince Volodymyr Zelensky to cede territory, but both attempts were unsuccessful”, - the material states.
According to unnamed administration officials, a resolution to the war between russia and Ukraine could have been possible if both sides had shown reasonableness. However, as the authors emphasize, the situation remains extremely complex.
“They seem to think that the main conflict is simple and amenable to compromise: russia wants to get the rest of the territory it does not control in Donbas; Ukraine wants reliable security guarantees. However, in reality, the problem is much more complex and challenging”, - the article notes.
Analysts emphasize that US attempts to achieve a diplomatic breakthrough ran into deep contradictions that cannot be resolved without a change in moscow’s position regarding Ukraine’s future.
As previously reported, the temporary chargé d’affaires of russia in Turkey, Alexey Ivanov, at the XVI Asian Conference of the international discussion club “Valdai” in Istanbul, stated that russia is ready for direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul “at any moment”.
