Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during a closed-door meeting with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, said that Beijing cannot allow russia to be defeated in the war against Ukraine. This was reported to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) by informed sources, according to the Telegram channel “The Moscow Times”.
According to the sources, the head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry explained that in such a scenario, the US would fully shift its focus to China. At the same time, Wang Yi categorically rejected accusations of financial or military support for russia. He emphasized that if Beijing were truly helping moscow, “the war would have ended long ago”.
The head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry also made it clear that Beijing would respond to the EU over the inclusion of Chinese banks in the 18th sanctions package against russia.
During the four-hour negotiations, Wang Yi reportedly gave the newly appointed Kallas several “history lectures”, sources told SCMP.
Furthermore, the head of China’s foreign policy agency said that Beijing may shorten the EU–China two-day summit program, hinting at dissatisfaction with EU policy.
Despite this, in the report by the EU diplomatic service on the meeting between Wang Yi and Kallas, the top European diplomat called the cooperation between Chinese companies and russia a threat. She urged Beijing to stop “any material support for the russian military-industrial complex” and advocated for a ceasefire.
