This was stated in a comment to RBC-Ukraine by Mykhailo Podoliak, advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
According to him, the recent decision by the Trump administration to dissolve the group under the U.S. National Security Council that was developing sanctions is part of a broad policy overhaul.
“This commission was created, let’s say, sometime in March, that is, at the beginning of spring, and shut down literally today, so it worked for about three months, slightly less. But they started a major purge, as I understand it, in the Security Council. In general, many people left their posts, and as part of that, this mission was also reduced”, - Podoliak said.
He stressed that this does not mean a complete rollback of sanction pressure—tools remain. There's the Graham–Blumenthal bill, and initiatives from the UK and France. So they can easily be accepted and used against russia.
"The issue lies in Trump’s own will and the understanding of what reputational losses he’s incurring today. More and more countries are realizing that the United States is shifting from the concept of ‘Make America Great Again’ to the concept of ‘Make America Isolated and Irrelevant in Global Affairs’. Well, that’s the strategy. But this strategy definitely won’t be embraced with open arms within the United States itself”, - Podoliak noted.
He believes isolationism won’t be viewed positively by Americans, since the U.S. has invested for decades in global dominance.
“They’ve invested for centuries to dominate. And now to hand it all over in six months to China, or to some pathetic russia? Well, that’s bizarre”, - the advisor added.
As reported, the Trump administration dismantled the group focused on applying pressure on russia.
