According to three U.S. officials, the Trump administration in recent weeks shelved an interagency working group it had created to develop a strategy for pressuring russia in order to accelerate peace talks with Ukraine.
The efforts, which began in early spring, lost momentum in May as it became increasingly apparent to participants that U.S. President Donald Trump was not interested in taking a more confrontational stance toward moscow, the officials said.
Despite a campaign promise to end the war in Ukraine on the first day of his presidency, Trump has grown increasingly frustrated in recent months that his efforts have not led to a breakthrough. He has begun suggesting that the United States might abandon its attempts to mediate peace altogether.
In light of that threat, the task of the working group seemed increasingly irrelevant, added the officials, who requested anonymity to describe sensitive internal discussions.
"By the end it lost momentum because the president wasn’t behind it. Instead of doing more, maybe he wanted to do less", - said one of the officials.
