The Verkhovna Rada Standing Committee has not support the proposal of the Prosecutor General's Office to remove immunity from People's Deputy Oles Dovgiy (the People's Will group) today, - Obozrevatel reports.

The Committee has considered that the proposal of the GPOU contains "major deficiencies" with regard to the evidentiary basis of the abuse of official position by the people's deputy. The corresponding resolution which was read out by the head of the Standing Committee of the Verkhovna Rada Pavlo Pynzenyk was unanimously supported by the present deputies.

At the same time, Dovgiy himself called upon the people's deputies to support the removal of his immunity in order "to put an end to this matter once and for all".

As previously reported, the Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko strove for bringing Dovgiy to responsibility under Art. 364 of the Criminal Code - abuse of power and official position. The GPOU charged Dovgiy with involvement in the illegal allocation of land plots on the territory of "Zhukov Island" protected nature reserve.

In August 2007, the Kyiv City Council had liquidated "Zhukov Island" nature reserve by its decision, having reduced its area from 1630 hectares to 196 hectares, and the land left outside the reserve was later distributed for building construction.

Dovgiy, as the secretary of the Kyiv City Council, held an extraordinary meeting at which scandalous land decisions were made.

At the meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee, the people's deputy insisted that the decision to allocate land was taken collectively, and he could not be solely responsible for voting of the Kyiv deputies who had approved the allocation of land plots.

In his turn, the Prosecutor General stated that Dovgiy put a scandalous decision to vote in violation of the procedure.

Proposal to remove immunity from five people's deputies came to the Verkhovna Rada on June 21.
