According to the global report "Freedom in the World 2026" by the human rights organization Freedom House, the territories of Ukraine occupied by russia have been recognized as the least free region on the planet, receiving a historic record-low score — minus 1 point out of 100 possible.

In terms of the level of lack of freedom and rights, the regions seized by the enemy surpass even countries with the most brutal dictatorships, such as South Sudan, Eritrea, North Korea and Turkmenistan.

The negative assessment of the occupied territories is due to large-scale repression, forced passportization, the complete elimination of independent media and opposition, expropriation of property, and the absence of basic physical security for the local population. Anyone can be kidnapped and tortured (this is called "being sent to the basement" — "OstroV"). Anyone can be killed without a trial.
